In fact she herself once blamed me
Kyprogeneia [Cyprus-Born]
because I prayed
this word:
I want.
Sappho, If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho, translated by Anne Carson
My discontent is loud and unwavering, like a season change or the shift from day to night. Its consistency reminds me of all I have left behind because of imposter syndrome, bad advice, and not-so-helpful voices.
All the times I wanted, but held back.
With this knowledge, my neck can feel strained under the weight of looking back and looking back. But desire is loud and unsatiable and eager to fall to its knees.
A prayer for the truth.
A spell for revealing what blocks the brightness of being.
De-Shaming Desire & Wanting
The Oracle of Delphi welcomed visitors with a question and an offering.
They came with their desire to know more. To know what to do. To know what to say.
To know what deities needed attention and celebration.
To know what might happen in the future.
But knowing what is to come does not offer resolution or guarantees.
What I believe to be true may not be how it unfolds, progresses, or offers itself to me. (Or to many in the Greek myths.)
In this eclipse season, I invite you to want anyway, even if you’re unsure how it will come to pass. Even if you’re unclear about what to do or how to act.
(And ESPECIALLY if you don’t think you are worthy.)
Desire what you desire. Want what you want.
There is no shame in wanting. And you do not ‘lose’ if you don’t get what you desire.
What you do get is information. And a chance to receive what you want.
If you ask.
And even in the ‘no’ of a moment, there is wisdom. Sometimes my shoulders drop and I realize I didn’t want that thing at all. Sometimes, I get angry and get motivated to find a different route.
Sometimes, rejection really is redirection.
Wanting can feel like a labor assigned by the godds. And maybe it is. Because it is your journey to make or prayer to offer or wish to admit.
And wanting is the ache that helps me sit up straighter.
The eclipsing of less important ways I spend my time and my energy.
What can I leave behind now that I have admitted what I want?
What do I do to stand in my way?
What desire is louder than the rest?
Words are spells.
Breath is magickal.
Your body translates stories into movement.
Your heart relaxes each time you say what you mean.
Perhaps you are an oracle for your desire.
Perhaps the next tarot card, meme, or random text is the answer.
Or the redirection.
Or the clarification.
Or the shift from shadowed to illuminated.
